What do your pictures say about you? And how do they line up with the brands you’re sending them to? Do they fit the image of that brand?
Listen up, model friends. This may be the most important thing we tell you. Your pictures are your calling cards. Know the target market of the people you’re sending them to. Do your research — and make it thorough. Don’t skip this step. It could cost you that amazing gig you’ve been dreaming of.
Think of it like this.
If you were applying for a position at a law firm, would you dress in jeans and a t-shirt? If you were applying to be a barista at a funky café, would you wear a black power suit?
Probably not, right?
For that funky café, you’d dress the part with your most funkified look. And at a law firm, you’d dress to impress by reflecting a more court-appropriate image.
The same goes for the pictures you send out to the brands and magazines you’re targeting in the plus-size industry. The pictures and comp cards you send out are your business cards. So make sure you send the right business cards to the appropriate brands.
I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had about this topic with friends in the industry. We all have a different vibe. Some of us, like Curvicality, prefer more editorial looks (fashion forward). Others are going for a sexier vibe. When you send us the wrong look, it tells us that you haven’t done your research.
I can’t tell you how many pictures we have received that would never line up with our brand. Don’t send your most scantily clad looks to the wrong editors. It frustrates us.
Along the same lines, think about what your social media channels say about you. We look at them. A lot. And often with a team of people.
This is why developing your brand is essential. Yes, you are a brand. Make everything you share reflect your brand.
Less is not more. That is, unless this is your brand. And that’s OK if it is! Just know which brands line up with your unique vibe.
Know. Who. You. Are.
Know what your pictures say about you, and what message you want every shoot to portray. Think about that before you send out your next set of pics.
